What is a
domain name?
A domain name, such as yourname.com, is your website’s unique
identifier on the Internet. It can be thought of as the address
where your website resides. When you or your visitors type your
domain name into their browser’s address bar the browser will
query your ISP nameserver which will provide it with directions on
how to find your website. Your ISP’s nameserver will actually
return the physical IP (Internet protocol) address of your
website’s webserver, which will be a string of numbers such as
139.5.1.255, and your browser will then find its way there.
You can see the advantages of the domain name system. While it is
also possible to get to your website simply by typing the numbers
it is far easier to remember a domain name than a bunch of
numbers.
How do I choose a domain name?
A domain name should be easy to spell, easy to remember, relevant
and, above all, available! The length of a domain name is
important as well. One or two word domain names (eg. cars.com or
rentalcars.com) are easier to recall than multiple worded ones.
Your domain could be your business name itself (eg.
myconsulting.com), a service you provide (eg.
managementconsulting.com) or something else you would like
associated with your business (eg. superiorsolutions.com). All
registrars and almost all hosts will have a search feature on
their website to find available domain names.
Try
Network Solution's WHOIS or
GoDaddy's WHOIS tool. Enter the domain name you'd like; if
it's available, they'll tell you (and encourage you to buy it --
go for it!).
How long do I own my domain name and what is a domain renewal?
When you register a domain name you generally only register it for
a year. This can be changed, of course, and you can register your
name for a number of years. Some country level domains are
restricted in the length of time they can be registered for. When
a domain is about to expire, you will normally receive a notice
from your registrar informing you of this and giving you the
opportunity to renew your domain with.
How do I report a domain name which has incorrect WHOIS data?
You can report .com/.net/.org/.biz/.info domains which have
incorrect WHOIS data at
http://reports.internic.net/cgi/rpt_whois/rpt.cgi
I got a domain transfer notice from the "Domain Registry of
America". Is this legitimate?
No. The email you got is trying to make you transfer your domain
to the Domain Registry of America is a con to make you transfer
your domain to them who charges higher prices than most other
registrars.
Thier pricing webpage at https://www.droa.com/pricechart.asp says
that they charge $25/year which is high in the domain name
industury. Thier homepage at http://www.droa.com claims that the
"industry standard price for 2 year registration" is $70/year
which is a lie.
